Amrita JSS Annual Report: Vocational Training in 586 Villages

Silly Anish is a baker. She completed the Craft Baker course at the Padamugam centre of Amrita JSS–Idukki. She now earns more than ₹2,000 a week selling her baked goods locally. She receives plenty of orders through social media, which she uses as an effective marketing platform. Her passion for cooking has turned into a reliable source of income, and her future plans involve setting up a small home bakery. “I’m happy with both the work and the income,” she says.

Since 2003, Amrita JSS has conducted training programs reaching 586 rural villages with 72,004 trainees, as well as 109 underprivileged semi-urban and urban areas, including colonies and slum pockets, training an additional 29,304 individuals. In total, the initiative has impacted over 101,308 people across India.

Amrita JSS empowers communities through skills training, clean-up drives, environmental awareness, yoga, financial literacy and many other awareness and capacity-building programs.

Thousands of women and men now earn a living, with some starting with a few thousand rupees and others building strong livelihoods of 20,000 to 50,000 rupees or more per month, and even launching small enterprises that employ others.

The Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) scheme is implemented by NGOs and funded by the Government of India. Priority groups are women, members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, minorities, and other underserved sections of society. JSSs reach  remote areas to cater for the needs of the poorest of the poor — beneficiaries with the least infrastructure and resources.
