Saturday, March 2,  2019
Ettimadai campus, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeeetham students from Mass Communication Department held a fund-raising event ‘Dhyuthi’ at Ettimadai campus on 28th February. Around 150 students participated the event enjoying cultural programs with a special guest star singer Gowry Lekshmi. Many stalls were installed around the venue for games where the audience could take part and donate.

The event raised around 10,000 rupees which is to be given to self-help group (SHG) women in Nandi Kovil village to start their new catering unit in order to buy vessels and other necessities. In this catering unit, which can be installed in front of the village, the women can cook daily and sell meals like chapatti, rice and curry to generate income.

The idea of donating the proceeds of the fund-raising event came from the students’ interaction with Sreeni KR (Amrita SeRVe agricultural program officer). He discussed with the students the planned venture of the SHG women and encouraged them to support it through the fund-raising.

The entire event was organized by students. Popular Malayali playback singer Gowry Lekshmi was invited to inaugurate the function. Professors and teachers supported the program with their presence: dean of engineering Dr. Sasangan Ramanathan, assistant professor Aswathi K.B., assistant professors Dr. Payel Das and Binoy V.S. of Mass Communication.

The event was a great success by its spirit: “When students stands for a cause and take social responsibility, it is a guiding light for others as well,” says Sreeni KR.
