Nature is Love
April 2021
“The thought flashed through my mind,” recollects Swami Jnanamritananda Puri when asking about how the Greenfriends was founded in 2001. This year marks the 20th anniversary of this M.A. Math’s volunteer collective of thousands that is taking action to heal the damage we have done to our precious planet. Greenfriends started by AYUDH youngsters planting saplings throughout Kerala. Over these twenty years, a global collective of volunteers take action step-by-step in massive activities both at the individual and community levels throughout the Americas, Europe, Australia and Asia.
Swamiji emphasises that in the philosophy of Sanatana Dharma, everything is worshipped on this planet, as nothing is separate. He further reminds that in India’s villages, we can still see this ancient tradition. The villagers still live with an inherent harmony with Mother Nature, especially in isolated tribal areas where the culture of the modern world has not made much of an impact.
During his various village visits, he has seen beautiful traditions in every state. For example, in some of the villages in Himachal Pradesh, there is a practice where they plant a tree in a community space and every year, they hold a three-day festival to worship that tree. All the villagers come together to share food, play music and dance; it is a joyous event.
In this eBook, Swami Jnanamritananda Puri shares how taking care of nature also heals our own inner hearts. The text is compiled and edited by Rajeswari Jolly.
