Monday, February 27, 2017

Villagers in Guptapada, Odisha joined together to rally for an addiction-free village. Their was message was, “Don’t drink alcohol, stay healthy, and have a prosperous life.”

It still tends to be the poor and those who live in rural areas that are the highest consumers of alcohol across the country—59% according to stats published in the Delhi Psychiatry Journal. Over the last couple of decades, the stress of life in poverty-afflicted areas has increased.

A National Family Health Survey conducted by the government for 2005-2006 found that one-third of men and 2% of women abused alcohol. And in the words of the well-known social crusader, Anna Hazare of Maharashtra, it is often the women who bear the brunt of the difficulties it causes, especially when it results in domestic violence.
