School girls in Telangana have made the decision to use reusable cloth menstrual pads in order to decrease pollution to the environment. 558 Saukhyam Cloth Pads were delivered to KGBC School in Dharur, Telengana.
A team from Amrita University joined the event to give a multimedia presentation on Saukhyam and the pressing need for eco-friendly menstrual hygiene practices.
The pads were made by the Amritasree Bhagyalakshmi JLG from Kodur, Amrita SeRVe’s village in Kodur, Telangana. Vikarabad District Revenue Officer, Ms Sandhya, handed over the cheque of Rs 72,000 to the women.
Women across our villages are learning how to stitch reusable menstrual pads made from cotton as a new income generation project with huge potential. The pads are washed and reused and, with proper care, can last many years. The pads were given the brand name Saukhyam—Sanskrit for happiness and well-being—and have many advantages.
They are good for health because the cotton allows skin to breathe. They are good for wallets because they can be used over and over again for several years. They are good for the environment because they are eco-friendly. Finally, they are good for our village women because they are creating a path to income generation and self empowerment.
Basically, it’s a win-win situation for all.
In December 2016, the National Institute of Rural Development gave the pads the award for Best Stall with an Innovative Product.
